Cambodia Initiates Private Commercial Centre in Macau to Boost International Trade

PHNOM PENH, July 25, 2024 — In a strategic move to enhance its global trade and investment footprint, Cambodia has announced plans to establish a private commercial centre in Macau, part of the People's Republic of China.

On July 22-23, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, Seang Thay, headed a delegation to Macau to finalize the location for the new Cambodian Private Commercial Centre. This initiative aims to amplify the visibility and accessibility of Cambodian products in international markets and serve as a hub for promoting Cambodia’s economic, trade, investment, tourism, and cultural opportunities abroad.

During the visit, Seang Thay engaged with key stakeholders, including the President of the Hengqin Regional Investment Fund and representatives from two private sector firms. He highlighted the advantageous business climate in Cambodia, especially the potential investment sectors and benefits available to businesses due to Cambodia's status as a Least Developed Country (LDC).

Discussions yielded positive responses; one company expressed interest in establishing a furniture processing plant in Cambodia to export products made from imported raw materials. Another company agreed to consider the feasibility of importing agricultural products from Cambodia.

This development is part of Cambodia’s broader strategy to establish similar commercial platforms in significant global markets including the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and China.
